Frequently Asked Questions

What primary services do you offer?

At Bugaboo Off-Grid, I specialize in off-grid and battery backup systems to keep you energy-independent, including design, installation, and maintenance of new and existing systems.

What other services are offered?

As a red-seal master electrician, with various experience in industrial, residential, and commercial settings, I offer troubleshooting services as well as installation of various fixtures from lighting to hot tubs. At this time I no longer wire new builds.

I also offer painting, roofing, and odd carpentry jobs as time allows.

How much does going off-grid cost?

The overall cost varies depending on system requirements with batteries being the bulk of the cost. To power a small cabin (lights, outlets for charging devices, small kitchen appliances) the cost ranges anywhere between $20,000-$50,000. It can cost upwards of $100,000 to power a medium-sized home. What is the process?

After initial discussion to verify your energy needs a deposit is taken to cover the costs of the site assessment and system design. Once the system is designed a materials list is created and an accurate overall cost is determined.

What limitations are there with an off-grid system?

Off-grid systems are not generally used to heat your home, as that would require a large battery bank which would increase the overall cost exponentially. Therefore, alternative heating methods, such as a wood-burning stove, are recommended.

The overall cost of the system can be mitigated by making adjustments to reduce energy consumption. For example, shutting off lights when not in use, being mindful of hot water usage (launder clothes with cold water), use LED bulbs, choose high-efficiency appliances, using blinds to block heat or cold transmission into your home. Simple lifestyle tweaks can go along way to bringing you energy independence with off-grid systems.

What products do you use?

I highly recommend Sol-Ark inverters and Fortress batteries. I have found them to have excellent warranty and customer service. They are also both American owned companies and their products are superior to any others that I have worked with.

I am a certified Sol-Ark installer.

What type of warranty do you provide?

Manufacturer warranties vary on the products. Upon commissioning, I ensure that the system is running as intended before handing over to the client. I prioritize existing clients if and when any maintenance issues arise.
